Add a Timestamp to GPT Responses for Better Time Reasoning

Job to be done: Improve GPT's temporal reasoning by adding a timestamp to responses

🇳🇬 Ways to use this in Nigeria

Ideas to get you started, adapt to your situation.

  • 9-5 employee

When drafting a complex report or presentation over a workday, use timestamped responses to ensure ChatGPT accurately references 'the sales figures we analyzed this morning' for better context and consistency.

  • Student

When drafting a research paper or preparing for JAMB over several hours, use timestamped responses to ensure ChatGPT accurately references points discussed earlier in the same chat, helping you build a coherent argument.

  • Entrepreneur

When brainstorming a business plan or refining a pitch deck over a full day, use timestamped responses to help ChatGPT accurately recall and compare ideas discussed hours earlier, like 'the market size we estimated this morning'.

What you’ll get

Every response from ChatGPT will begin with a timestamp, showing the exact date and time. This helps the AI keep track of how long your conversation has been going on, preventing it from making inaccurate statements about past interactions (like saying “over the past few weeks” when it’s only been a day).

Tools you need

  • ChatGPT (freemium): An AI chatbot for generating text and understanding conversations.

Steps

  1. Open Custom Instructions: Log in to ChatGPT. On a phone, tap the three lines (menu icon) in the top left, then tap your profile picture or initials at the bottom. On a computer, click your profile picture or initials in the bottom left. Select “Custom instructions” from the menu.

  2. Add the timestamp instruction: In the “How would you like ChatGPT to respond?” box, paste the following instruction. Remember to change Australia/Perth to your preferred location and [DD-MM-YYYY HH:mm] to your desired date and time format.

Start every assistant response with a timestamp in Australia/Perth time using this exact format: [DD-MM-YYYY HH:mm] Accuracy of the timestamp matters. Do not estimate casually. Use the most reliable available current Australia/Perth time. Do not add extra explanation about the timestamp unless I ask.

You should see the text appear in the input box. Make sure to adjust the timezone and format to suit your needs before saving.

  3. Save and start a new chat: Click the “Save” button. Then, start a new conversation with ChatGPT. Ask it anything.

You should see the AI’s first response, and all subsequent responses, begin with the timestamp you specified, like [04-07-2026 03:26] Hello! How can I help you today?

This clever tip was shared by Reddit user /u/WhiplashNinja, who discovered that adding a timestamp to GPT’s custom instructions significantly improves its ability to reason about the passage of time within a conversation.

Notes & variations

  • Free-tier alternatives: Other AI chatbots like Claude.ai and Gemini.google.com also offer similar features (often called “persona” or “custom instructions”) where you can set persistent rules for the AI’s responses. You can adapt this same instruction for those platforms.
  • Common mistake: Forgetting to enable custom instructions. After setting them up, make sure the toggle switch for “Custom instructions” is turned on in your settings, otherwise, ChatGPT will ignore them.
  • Tip for better results: If you find the timestamp is slowing down responses too much, you can simplify the format (e.g., just [HH:mm]) or remove the instruction if precise temporal reasoning isn’t critical for your current task. You can also experiment with adding more context to the instruction, such as "Assume all conversations start at this timestamp: [DD-MM-YYYY HH:mm]" if you want to anchor the AI to a specific starting point.
