Filter Job Postings and Evaluate Fit with ChatGPT

Job to be done: Use AI to filter and evaluate job postings for a more strategic job search

🇳🇬 Ways to use this in Nigeria

Ideas to get you started, adapt to your situation.

  • 9-5 employee

Use ChatGPT to evaluate a job posting for a Senior Analyst role, checking if your current skills and experience align and identifying any gaps before you apply.

  • Student

Paste an NYSC PPA job description into ChatGPT to see how well your university degree and skills match the requirements, getting a recommendation to apply or skip.

What you’ll get

You’ll set up ChatGPT as a personal job search assistant that understands your experience and preferences. It will help you quickly filter job postings and evaluate how well your skills match specific roles. This approach helps you focus your efforts on jobs where you have a higher chance of success, saving time and making your job search more strategic.

Tools you need

  • ChatGPT (freemium): An AI chatbot that can understand your instructions and provide text-based responses.

Steps

  1. Open ChatGPT: Go to the ChatGPT website in your phone or computer’s web browser. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to sign up for a free one. Once logged in, you’ll see a chat interface.

  2. Tell ChatGPT about yourself and your preferences: This is the most important setup step. You need to give ChatGPT a clear picture of your experience, the types of jobs you want, and the ones you want to avoid. Copy and paste the prompt below, filling in your own details where indicated:

I need your help as my personal job search assistant. Here is my background and what I'm looking for:

My experience: [Describe your work history, skills, achievements, and education here. Be detailed. For example: "I have 3 years of experience in customer support, managing a team of 5. My key skills include conflict resolution, CRM software (like Salesforce), and data entry. I also have a degree in Business Administration."]

    Target roles:
    - Customer Support
    - Customer Success
    - Customer Onboarding
    - Client/Customer Operations
    - QA / Support QA
    - CRM-related roles
    - Associate and early-career positions
[Add or remove roles from the list above, and add any others you are interested in. For example: "- Project Coordinator", "- Junior Data Analyst"]

Company types I prefer: [e.g., remote-first, startups, large corporations, specific industries like tech or finance, companies with good work-life balance, companies focused on social impact.]

Roles/companies I want to AVOID: [e.g., sales-heavy roles, companies in specific controversial industries, roles requiring extensive travel, roles that are purely administrative with no growth path.]

Based on this, I will share job postings with you. Please help me filter them and evaluate their suitability.

You should see ChatGPT acknowledge your instructions, perhaps by saying something like, “Understood! I’m ready to help you with your job search.” It now has your profile in mind for future questions.

  3. Get job alerts from other sources: The author doesn’t share their exact method for getting job alerts. You will need to set up job alerts on popular job boards like LinkedIn, Indeed, or Glassdoor using keywords from your target roles (e.g., “Customer Support Remote”, “QA Associate”). When you receive an alert for a job that looks interesting, you can then bring it to ChatGPT.

You should have a job description ready to copy and paste for the next step.

  4. Evaluate a job posting: When you find a job posting from your alerts, copy the full job description. Then, paste it into ChatGPT with the following prompt to get an evaluation:

I have a job posting. Please evaluate it against my profile and preferences. Tell me:
    1. Is this a realistic role for me, given my experience?
    2. How well does my experience match the requirements? Point out specific strengths and weaknesses.
    3. What are the biggest gaps in my experience for this role?
    4. Based on everything you know about me, would you recommend I apply to this, or skip it? Explain why.
    5. (Optional, if relevant) Does the job description suggest this company is hiring globally or only in specific regions?

    Here is the job posting:
[Paste the full job description here]

ChatGPT will analyze the job description against the profile you provided in Step 2 and give you a detailed breakdown. You should see clear answers to each of your questions, helping you decide whether to apply.

This workflow was shared by Reddit user /u/Antique_Noise_4281, who described how they transformed ChatGPT into a personal job-search assistant to filter and evaluate job postings more strategically. The post highlighted how this approach helped them focus on more suitable roles rather than applying to many random jobs.

Notes & variations

  • Free-tier alternatives: If you prefer other AI chatbots, you can use the free tiers of Google Gemini (gemini.google.com) or Anthropic’s Claude (claude.ai) for similar results. The prompts would work the same way.
  • Common mistake: Do not blindly trust the AI’s recommendations. Always review its analysis and use your own judgment. The AI is a tool to assist you, not replace your decision-making, especially in a critical process like job searching.
  • Tip for better results: The more detailed and accurate you are when describing your experience and preferences in Step 2, the better and more relevant ChatGPT’s evaluations will be. Update your profile in ChatGPT as your skills or target roles evolve.
