Generate historical images from a first-person view with AI

Job to be done: Generate photorealistic historical images from a first-person perspective

🇳🇬 Ways to use this in Nigeria

Ideas to get you started, adapt to your situation.

  • Student

Generate a first-person image of a student in ancient Greece studying scrolls for a history assignment.

  • Entrepreneur

Create a first-person image of a merchant in 1800s Lagos inspecting goods for a product launch.

  • 9-5 employee

Visualize a first-person image of a scribe in ancient Egypt writing a report for a historical presentation.

What you’ll get

You will get a unique, photorealistic image showing a moment from human history, seen through the eyes of a person who lived then. The image will look like an accidental, handheld photo, complete with natural imperfections. This approach uses AI to creatively reconstruct historical scenes, offering a vivid, personal glimpse into the past without needing complex historical research.

Tools you need

  • Gemini (freemium): An AI assistant from Google that can generate images from text descriptions.

Steps

  1. Open Gemini: Go to the Gemini website on your phone or computer. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to sign in with a Google account.

You should see the chat interface ready for your input.

  2. Paste the prompt: Copy the detailed prompt below and paste it into the chat box. This prompt guides the AI to create a specific kind of historical image.

Use the full extent of your capabilities to create a photorealistic first-person image from the perspective of a randomly selected person at a randomly selected moment anywhere in the human past. Sample freely across the full span of human existence, from deep prehistory to the recent past. Choose the exact date, place, identity, status, culture, activity, and circumstances independently. The person may be anyone. Prefer a moment that is unusually revealing, consequential, emotionally charged, or visually distinctive for that person's life, work, culture, or historical setting, while still remaining realistic and grounded. Show only visual evidence of who they are and what is happening through their body, hands, clothing, tools, possessions, surroundings, and immediate interactions. No captions or readable text. Ensure strict historical and geographical accuracy in materials, clothing, architecture, technology, food, hygiene, weather, landscape, and social behaviour. Make it look like an accidental handheld photo: natural imperfect lighting, uneven exposure, awkward framing, slight blur, dirt, wear, clutter, and no cinematic styling, fantasy, or stereotypes What do you get?

After a short wait, Gemini will generate one or more images based on your request. Review them to see if they match the historical, first-person style.

  3. Refine (optional): If the image isn’t quite what you imagined, you can ask Gemini to make changes. For example, you could say ‘Make the lighting darker’ or ‘Show a different historical period, like ancient Egypt’.

Gemini will generate new images based on your feedback.

This creative image generation technique was shared by Reddit user /u/ehtio on the r/StableDiffusion subreddit. They posted the prompt to inspire others to explore historical perspectives through AI.

Notes & variations

Other freemium AI image generators like Microsoft Copilot (which uses DALL-E 3) or Ideogram.ai can also be used with this prompt, though results may vary slightly. A common pitfall is that AI models can sometimes struggle with strict historical accuracy or avoid generating certain sensitive content. If the image doesn’t look right, try rephrasing parts of the prompt or specifying a different historical period or person. To get even more specific results, you can add details to the prompt, such as ‘from the perspective of a Roman farmer in 50 AD’ or ‘during the Nigerian Civil War in 1968’. The more specific you are, the more focused the AI’s output will be.
