Get Consistent Answers from Any AI Chat Assistant with a Structured Prompt

Job to be done: Get consistently structured answers from any AI model for reliable comparison

🇳🇬 Ways to use this in Nigeria

Ideas to get you started, adapt to your situation.

  • Student

Get a JAMB practice question analyzed for assumptions and potential errors before your exam.

  • Entrepreneur

Analyze a business idea for assumptions and confidence level before pitching it.

  • Small business

Get a structured analysis of customer feedback to identify key assumptions and potential issues.

What you’ll get

You will get a consistently structured answer from any AI chat assistant, divided into four specific sections: Direct answer, Key assumptions, What could make this answer wrong, and Confidence. This method helps you reliably compare outputs from different AI models or track how a single model’s performance changes over time, by forcing them to present information in the same format.

Tools you need

  • Any AI Chat Assistant (freemium): To generate structured answers using the provided prompt. Examples include ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

Steps

  1. Open your AI chat assistant: Go to your preferred AI chat assistant (like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini) on your phone or computer. You should see the chat interface ready for your input.

  2. Copy the structured prompt: Copy the entire prompt template below.

You are helping me with: [TASK]. Here is the input: [PASTE YOUR CONTENT OR QUESTION]. Answer in exactly these four sections, same order every time, nothing else: Direct answer, three sentences max. Key assumptions you made, as a short list. If you assumed anything I didn't state, put it here. What could make this answer wrong, and how I'd check it. Confidence: high, medium, or low, and one line on why. Do not add intros, summaries, or sign-offs. If the input is missing something you need, say what's missing instead of guessing.

You should have the prompt copied to your clipboard.

  3. Paste and fill in the blanks: Paste the copied prompt into the chat box. Then, replace [TASK] with what you want the AI to do (e.g., “summarize this article”, “answer this question”, “analyze this business idea”). Replace [PASTE YOUR CONTENT OR QUESTION] with the actual text or question you need help with. For example, if you want to summarize an article, your prompt might start: You are helping me with: summarizing this article. Here is the input: [the full article text]. You should see your complete, customized prompt ready to send.

  4. Send the prompt: Press the send button or hit Enter. You should receive an answer from the AI assistant that strictly follows the four-section structure: “Direct answer”, “Key assumptions you made”, “What could make this answer wrong”, and “Confidence”.

Notes & variations

  • Free-tier viability: This workflow works perfectly with the free tiers of popular AI chat assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
  • Common mistake: A common pitfall is forgetting to replace the bracketed placeholders [TASK] and [PASTE YOUR CONTENT OR QUESTION] with your actual information. The AI will likely just tell you to fill them in.
  • Tip for better results: Be as clear and specific as possible when defining your [TASK] and providing your [PASTE YOUR CONTENT OR QUESTION]. The more precise your input, the better the structured output will be.
  • Variation: The author notes you can customize the four sections to fit your specific needs. For example, you could ask for “Pros and Cons”, “Actionable Steps”, or “Related Ideas” instead of the original sections. Just make sure to clearly define the new sections in the prompt.
