Improve Marketing Copy with Strategic AI Prompts (Claude/ChatGPT)

Job to be done: Improve the quality and insightfulness of AI-generated marketing copy

🇳🇬 Ways to use this in Nigeria

Ideas to get you started, adapt to your situation.

  • Entrepreneur

Craft Instagram ad copy for your new skincare line by first asking Claude what Nigerian women secretly desire in beauty products.

  • Small business

Get ChatGPT to write WhatsApp broadcast messages for your food business by first asking it what hungry customers truly want beyond just a meal.

  • Student

Generate catchy slogans for your campus event using ChatGPT, after asking it what students secretly wish for during university social gatherings.

What you’ll get

You’ll get marketing copy that sounds less generic and more impactful, by making the AI think strategically about your audience’s hidden desires before it starts writing. This approach works because it forces the AI to uncover deeper insights, moving beyond obvious facts to create more persuasive messages.

Tools you need

  • Claude (freemium): An AI chatbot for generating text and creative content.
  • ChatGPT (freemium): Another popular AI chatbot for generating text, answering questions, and assisting with creative tasks.

Steps

This workflow uses a two-step process. First, you’ll ask the AI to act as a strategic copywriter and answer a key question about your audience. Then, you’ll use that insight to generate the actual marketing copy. The author mentioned asking three strategic questions, but only provided the first one in the excerpt.

  1. Uncover audience insights: Open your chosen AI chatbot (Claude or ChatGPT). Tell it to act as a strategic copywriter and ask it to answer the following question about your audience. Replace the bracketed text with your specific details:

You are a strategic copywriter. I need help developing marketing copy for [your product/service, e.g., a new online course for small business owners].

Before writing, I want you to answer one strategic question about the audience, based on the principle that good copy comes from deep insights, not just demographics. What does the audience actually want that they won't say out loud? Not the demographic, the want.

Provide a detailed answer for [your target audience, e.g., small business owners in Nigeria] regarding [your product/service].

You should get a detailed response from the AI that identifies a hidden desire or unspoken need of your target audience related to your product or service.

  2. Generate marketing copy: Now, using the insight the AI just provided, ask it to write your marketing copy. Replace the bracketed text with your specific details and the insight from the previous step:

Based on the insight you just provided about the audience's unspoken wants for [your product/service], which was: "[paste the AI's insight here]", write:

    - 3 short marketing headlines (under 10 words each)
    - 2 short ad descriptions (under 25 words each)

Focus on addressing that unspoken want directly in the copy.

You should receive marketing headlines and ad descriptions that feel more targeted and insightful, directly addressing the hidden desire you uncovered.

Notes & variations

  • Free-tier limits: Both Claude and ChatGPT offer generous free tiers that should be sufficient for this workflow. If you need to generate a very large volume of copy, you might encounter usage limits.
  • Common mistake: The biggest mistake is skipping the strategic questioning step and going straight to asking the AI to “write me an ad.” This leads to generic, uninspired copy. Always start with the “why” and “who.”
  • Tip for better results: If the AI’s initial insight isn’t strong enough, ask follow-up questions to dig deeper. For example, “Why do they feel that way?” or “What are the consequences if they don’t get this unspoken want fulfilled?” The more specific and insightful the AI’s answer in Step 1, the better your final copy will be.
