Learn to Code and Debug with an AI Chatbot as Your Personal Tutor

Job to be done: Use AI as a personal tutor for learning to code and debugging

🇳🇬 Ways to use this in Nigeria

Ideas to get you started, adapt to your situation.

  • Student

    A university student struggling with a Python assignment can paste their code and error message into the AI chatbot to get a clear explanation and fix, helping them submit correct work.

  • 9-5 employee

    An employee in an HR department can use the AI to learn basic Python to automate generating monthly attendance reports from an Excel sheet, saving hours of manual work.

  • Entrepreneur

    An entrepreneur building a simple e-commerce site can ask the AI to explain 'database queries' in PHP and provide a basic script to fetch product details, helping them build out their product catalog.

What you’ll get

You will learn programming concepts, get basic code scripts, and understand how to run and debug them on your computer. The AI acts as a patient, non-judgmental tutor, guiding you through the learning process. This method breaks down complex coding topics into simple, step-by-step instructions, making it accessible even if you’re new to programming.

Tools you need

  • ChatGPT (freemium): An AI chatbot that can explain concepts, write code, and guide you through technical tasks.

Steps

  1. Open your AI Chatbot: Go to the ChatGPT website on your phone or computer. You should see the chat interface ready for your input.

  2. Ask for a concept explanation and a basic script: Paste the following prompt into the chat. You can replace “variable” and “Python” with any concept or programming language you want to learn.

    Explain what a "variable" is in Python like I'm 12 years old. Then, write a very basic Python script that uses a variable, and show me step-by-step how to run this script on my computer.

    You should get a simple explanation of the concept, a short code snippet, and clear instructions on how to save and run the file (e.g., “open Notepad, paste code, save as .py, open Command Prompt, type python your_script.py”).

  3. Debug a syntax error: If you’re trying to fix a coding mistake, paste your code and the error message. Here’s an example of asking the AI to fix a common syntax error:

    I wrote this Python code, but it's giving me a "SyntaxError: invalid syntax" message. Can you help me find and fix the error?

    print("Hello, World!"

    The AI should identify the missing parenthesis, provide the corrected code, and explain why the error occurred.

  4. Get project ideas: If you’re looking for practice, ask the AI for project ideas based on what you’ve learned. For example:

    I've learned about variables and basic print statements in Python. What are some simple project ideas I could try to build to practice these concepts? Give me 3 ideas suitable for a beginner.

    You should get a list of simple project ideas (e.g., a simple calculator, a “guess the number” game).

  5. Understand an error log: When your code doesn’t work, it often shows an “error log” or “traceback.” Paste this message and ask the AI to explain it:

    I ran my Python script and got this error message:

    Traceback (most recent call last):
      File "my_script.py", line 1, in <module>
        num = "ten"
        result = num + 5
    TypeError: can only concatenate str (not "int") to str

    Can you explain what this error means in simple terms and how to fix it?

    The AI should explain the error (e.g., you can’t add text to a number directly) and suggest how to fix it.

Notes & variations

  • Free-tier alternatives: Other freemium AI chatbots like Claude (claude.ai) or Gemini (gemini.google.com) can also be used for this workflow.
  • Common mistake: Not being specific enough in your prompts. If you just say “help me code,” the AI won’t know where to start. Always provide context, your goal, and any code or error messages you have.
  • Tip for better results: Break down complex problems into smaller questions. If a concept is still unclear, ask the AI to re-explain it in a different way or with more examples. Always try to run the code the AI provides to learn by doing.
