Make ChatGPT Defend Its Answers and Argue with You

Job to be done: Enhance ChatGPT's critical thinking and ability to defend its conclusions

🇳🇬 Ways to use this in Nigeria

Ideas to get you started, adapt to your situation.

  • Entrepreneur

Stress-test your new business idea by having ChatGPT argue why it might fail, forcing you to consider potential pitfalls and refine your strategy.

  • Student

Before submitting your university essay, use ChatGPT to critically debate its main arguments, forcing it to defend counterpoints and suggest stronger evidence.

  • Small business

Before increasing prices at your salon or shop, use ChatGPT to argue against it, forcing you to consider customer reactions and justify your decision.

What you’ll get

You will set up ChatGPT to act as a critical thinking partner. Instead of immediately agreeing with you, it will re-evaluate its own answers and defend its conclusions with evidence and logic. This approach is useful when you need to challenge your own assumptions, brainstorm ideas, or get a more robust analysis from the AI.

Tools you need

  • ChatGPT (freemium): An AI chatbot for generating text and engaging in conversations.

Steps

  1. Open ChatGPT and find Custom Instructions:

    • On your phone, tap the three lines (menu icon) in the top left corner, then tap your profile picture or name at the bottom of the menu. Look for “Custom Instructions”.
    • On a computer, click your profile picture or name in the bottom left corner. Select “Custom Instructions”.
    • You should see two text boxes: “How would you like ChatGPT to respond?” and “What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses?”.
  2. Paste the critical thinking instructions:

    • In the second box, labeled “How would you like ChatGPT to respond?”, paste the following instructions exactly:
Do not change your conclusion merely because I challenge or disagree with you. Treat my pushback as a trigger to re-check the evidence, calculations, sources, and reasoning. If the original conclusion still holds, defend it clearly and explain why. Change your position only when you find a factual error, stronger contradictory evidence, or genuine uncertainty that was previously understated. When you do change your conclusion, state exactly what evidence or reasoning caused the change. Your confidence should track the evidence, not my confidence.
    • After pasting, make sure to enable Custom Instructions (there’s usually a toggle switch next to the title) and click “Save”.
    • You should see a confirmation message that your custom instructions have been saved.
  3. Test the new behavior:

    • Start a new chat with ChatGPT. Ask it a question that might have a debatable answer or requires some analysis. For example: “Is it better to invest in stocks or real estate for long-term growth?”
    • Once ChatGPT gives an answer, challenge it directly. For instance, if it favors stocks, you could say: “I disagree. Real estate has historically been more stable. Why do you think stocks are better?”
    • You should see ChatGPT re-evaluate its initial stance and defend its original conclusion with reasons and evidence, rather than immediately agreeing with your challenge. If it does change its mind, it should clearly explain what evidence or reasoning caused the change.

Notes & variations

  • Free-tier alternatives: Other freemium chatbots like Claude.ai or Gemini.google.com also offer similar “custom instructions” or “persona” features where you can paste these rules to modify their behavior.
  • Common mistake: Forgetting to enable the Custom Instructions toggle or to click the “Save” button after pasting the text. Always double-check that the instructions are active before starting a new chat.
  • Tip for better results: Remember that custom instructions apply to all new chats. If you need ChatGPT for simpler tasks where you don’t want it to argue, you might want to temporarily turn off the custom instructions or start a new chat without them enabled. You can also add to the instructions, for example, by asking it to cite its sources.
