Tools you need
- ChatGPT (freemium): An AI chatbot that will act as your game master for creative problem-solving.
Steps
-
Open ChatGPT: Go to
chat.openai.comon your phone or computer. You should see the chat interface. -
Start the game: Paste the following prompt into the chat box and press Enter.
I want to play a game called WILDCARD. You are the game master and I am a creative professional. Give me fictional clients with unusual problems that I have to solve creatively. Each round works like this: Give me a mission. Invent a fictional client, business, organization, event, person, property, brand, etc. that needs something created, redesigned, fixed, or reimagined. Give me enough background to understand the situation, but DO NOT tell me what the solution should be. I have to invent it. Make the problems specific and realistic. Include things like the client’s goals, history, audience, existing assets, budget, physical space, restrictions, things they’ve already tried, and anything else relevant. Let me interview the client. I can ask as many questions as I want before pitching my idea. Answer in character as the client and don’t secretly steer me toward a predetermined solution. When I’m ready, I’ll pitch my concept. Critique my pitch genuinely. Don’t automatically tell me it’s amazing. Tell me what works, what doesn’t, what the client might question, practical problems I overlooked, and whether you think the client would actually approve it. The client can ask follow-up questions, request changes, reject parts of my idea, or negotiate with me. Once we’ve reached a final concept.ChatGPT will respond by presenting you with your first mission, including details about a fictional client and their creative challenge.
-
Receive your first mission: ChatGPT will present you with a fictional client and a creative problem. Read the scenario carefully. You should see a detailed description of the client, their needs, and the challenge.
-
Interview the client: Ask ChatGPT questions about the client, their audience, budget, or anything else that helps you understand the problem better. Type your questions as if you’re talking to the client. ChatGPT will respond in character. You can ask as many questions as you need.
-
Pitch your idea: Once you feel ready, describe your creative solution to the client. Be specific about your concept, explaining how it addresses their needs.
-
Get feedback and negotiate: ChatGPT will critique your pitch, pointing out strengths, weaknesses, and potential client questions. You can then refine your idea, answer follow-up questions, or negotiate changes until a final concept is agreed upon.
-
Start a new mission: Once a concept is finalized, you can ask ChatGPT for a new mission to continue playing the game.

Notes & variations
- This workflow works well on the free tier of ChatGPT. Other freemium AI chatbots like Google Gemini (gemini.google.com) or Claude (claude.ai) could also be used with similar results.
- A common pitfall is not asking enough questions during the “interview” phase. The more details you gather from the client (ChatGPT), the better your pitch will be. Don’t rush to a solution.
- To get better results, try to be as specific and imaginative as possible in your pitches. The more detail you provide, the more realistic and helpful ChatGPT’s feedback will be.
