Transfer Chat Context in ChatGPT (Manual Method)

Job to be done: Transfer context between ChatGPT chats effectively

🇳🇬 Ways to use this in Nigeria

Ideas to get you started, adapt to your situation.

  • Student

After using ChatGPT to brainstorm and outline your final year project (FYP) over several days, transfer the current outline and previous instructions to a new chat to continue refining it without the AI losing track.

  • Entrepreneur

When developing a marketing strategy for your new tech startup, transfer the defined target audience and key messaging from an old chat to a new one to generate fresh social media campaign ideas.

  • Small business

After using ChatGPT to draft a new price list and service descriptions for your salon, transfer the agreed-upon details to a new chat to generate promotional texts for Instagram.

What you’ll get

You will be able to carry over important information, decisions, and goals from a long or old ChatGPT conversation into a brand new one. This prevents the AI from “forgetting” past discussions, allowing you to build on previous work without starting from scratch. It works by creating a focused summary specifically designed for a new AI chat.

Tools you need

  • ChatGPT (freemium): The AI chat tool where you will summarize old conversations and start new ones.

Steps

  1. Open your old chat: Go to the ChatGPT website or app and open the conversation you want to summarize.

    • You should see the full history of your previous discussion.
  2. Request a briefing: In the old chat, paste the following prompt and send it:

Summarize everything we decided in this conversation as a briefing for a new chat that has no memory of it. Include the goal, the decisions made, the constraints, anything still open, and the exact wording of any final text we agreed on. Skip the back and forth.
    • You should receive a concise summary of your conversation, written as if for a new AI assistant who knows nothing about your past discussion.
  3. Copy the briefing: Select and copy the entire summary provided by ChatGPT.

    • Make sure you have copied all the relevant text.
  4. Start a new chat: Open a brand new chat in ChatGPT.

    • You should see a blank conversation window, ready for your first prompt.
  5. Paste the context: Start your new prompt by typing “Context from a previous conversation:” and then paste the summary you copied. After pasting, add a new line and then write what you actually want the AI to do next.

    Context from a previous conversation:
    [Paste the summary here]

Now, based on this context, [write your actual request here, e.g., "draft three social media posts promoting the new plan"].
    • The new chat will now have all the necessary background information to understand your request and continue working from where you left off in the old conversation.

Original source

This workflow was shared by Reddit user /u/Ok_Negotiation_2587 on the platform Reddit. They described a manual method for transferring context between ChatGPT conversations to overcome the issue of AI forgetting past discussions.

Notes & variations

  • Free-tier viability: This manual method works perfectly with the free tier of ChatGPT. You don’t need any paid subscriptions or extra tools.
  • Common mistake: Simply asking for “a summary” might give you a general overview that isn’t detailed enough for a new AI chat. The key is to specifically ask for a “briefing for a new chat that has no memory of it,” which forces the AI to include all critical details for a fresh start.
  • Tip for better results: Before asking for the briefing, quickly scroll through your old chat to remind yourself of the most crucial points. If the conversation was extremely long, you might even ask ChatGPT to summarize specific sections first, then combine those into a final briefing.
  • Automated alternative: The original author also mentions an automated tool called “AI Toolbox” (a browser extension) that can do this more quickly by typing @@ and selecting a past chat. This tool has a free plan for 3 uses a day and a paid plan for unlimited use.
